Sheela Sharma

Short Bio

Sheela Sharma is a nationally acclaimed contemporary artist from Lucknow, India, and a distinguished mouth and foot painting artist whose work embodies resilience, discipline, and creative excellence. A graduate of the College of Art & Craft, Lucknow University (BFA, 1991), she has spent over three decades building a strong and expressive artistic practice.

At just four years old, she lost both her arms and part of one foot in a devastating train accident, Sheela transformed limitation into strength, mastering a demanding art form through years of dedication. Her works have been exhibited widely across India and internationally, with solo shows at institutions such as Jehangir Art Gallery (Mumbai), Triveni Kala Sangam (New Delhi), Manav Sangrahalaya (Bhopal), and Art Interface Gallery (Mumbai), along with international group exhibitions in Dubai, Chicago, and Singapore.

Sheela is a recipient of the National Award (2003) and multiple state and regional honors, with fellowships from the Government of India and Lalit Kala Akademy. A member of the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists Association, her art stands as a powerful statement of perseverance, dignity, and the limitless potential of human creativity.

Sheela Sharma is establishing an art training and resource centre under the Makhumpur scheme, expected to be completed by 2026. The centre aims to empower underprivileged and persons with disabilities by providing art training, skill development, and livelihood opportunities. With a total project cost of approximately ₹26.7 lakh partly supported by government funding the centre will offer training in painting, drawing, and other creative practices, while also connecting emerging artists to exhibitions and sales platforms.
