The Joy of Little Things in Life: Few Photographs, A Cake & A Trip. This week, we focused on everyday stories—covering emotions, independence, and travel—to highlight that people with disabilities are just like anyone else: ordinary, not different or extraordinary.
When Pictures Capture What Words Can’t: We captured heartfelt, candid moments of our artists with disabilities—like Ritvik, whose parents beam with pride as he plays his instrument; the Sunadha band members, all visually impaired, sharing a burst of laughter over a silly joke; Archana, lost in the quiet joy of preparing her canvas; and the dance team, embracing one another, reminding us they are more than performers—they are family. These intimate glimpses reveal the deep, genuine emotions that bind us all together.
From drawing cakes on paper to cutting one in real life: Aarush Gupta, an artist on autism spectrum had always loved birthdays, but this year’s celebration was unlike any other. He always wanted to cut a big cake but instead of waiting for others to plan his special day, he took matters into his own hands. From the money earned through a recent art event at Nestlé, he carefully budgeted for everything—his new clothes, a delicious cake, and, most importantly, a memorable trip to Rangmanch Farmhouse for his mother, grandmother, and himself. For the first time, he wasn’t relying on anyone else to make his birthday special; he had made it happen all on his own.
From Gwalior to Agra: A Journey of Friendship: During the training period at Godrej Consumer, a unique bond blossomed between two groups—one from Gwalior, consisting of candidates with Locomotor Disabilities, and another from Chennai, comprising hearing-impaired individuals. Though they spoke different languages and came from distinct cultural backgrounds, they found ways to communicate, support, and uplift one another. Fuelled by their newfound confidence, they decided to explore the world beyond training. They independently travelled to Delhi and Agra, visiting historic sites and embracing the adventure.
News 1: Chhonzin Angmo Becomes First Blind Indian Woman to Scale Mount Everest. Chhonzin Angmo, a 29-year-old from Himachal’s Kinnaur district, has become the first visually impaired Indian woman to summit Mount Everest. Despite losing her sight at eight, she pursued higher education at Miranda House, Delhi, and works at Union Bank of India. An avid mountaineer, she’s scaled Mt Kang Yatsae 2, trekked to Everest Base Camp, and conquered a 6,000m peak with a Divyang expedition. Her achievements have earned national recognition and mention in PM Modi’s 'Mann ki Baat'. (Source: The Print). News 2: Gopi Krishnan Varma: India's First Lead Actor with Down Syndrome in 'Sitaare Zameen Par'. Gopi Krishnan Varma, born in 1988 in Kozhikode, Kerala, has made history as India's first lead actor with Down Syndrome. He gained recognition for his role in the Malayalam film Thirike (2021), where he portrayed Sebi, a character with special needs. This performance earned him a place in the India Book of Records for being the first actor with Down Syndrome to lead a commercial film. Now, he stars alongside Aamir Khan in the upcoming Hindi film Sitaare Zameen Par, a remake of the Spanish film Campeones. The film aims to highlight the challenges faced by individuals with Down Syndrome and promote inclusivity in society. (Source: TOI).
