How Tata Motors is shaping an Inclusive, Accessible India
Jamshedpur, the Steel City of India, shares a special bond with Tata that can be seen in every corner of the city. Adding to that legacy, Tata Motors launched the city’s first hiring initiative for persons with disabilities at its plant — and it’s been inspiring! From accessibility upgrades to inclusive recruitment and sensitisation sessions, the plant came alive with change. Today, 36 persons with disabilities work in core manufacturing roles on the engine assembly line, supported with hostel stays, transport, and daily sign language greetings.
Reckitt’s Internship Program for persons with disabilities
Recently, Reckitt hired two talented professionals with locomotor disability and visual disability, sourced and trained by Atypical Advantage. During one of the Disability Sensitization sessions, an employee shared a moving reflection. He recalled working as a scribe for visually impaired students during college, and how he wanted to “help” by correcting their answers, believing it was empathy.
“I thought I was being kind. But these sensitization sessions made me realize that real empathy is respecting someone’s choices, not making decisions for them.”
This small but impactful story is a beautiful reminder that true inclusion transforms not just workplaces, but mindsets.
Who knew that art could help someone find their way
Recently, Karan Arora, our artist with hearing impairment, completed a three-piece canvas painting that now beautifully adorns the wall of a villa. But there’s more to this story — Karan wanted to truly understand the deeper meaning behind the client’s request. The client, who is visually impaired, shared, “I experience my home through textures and movement. The paintings here aren’t just decoration — they help me navigate and feel connected.” Karan soon realized how tactile artworks guided the client through the rooms. In just one week, he created an abstract piece with green gradients shifting from light to dark, evoking the calm of a deep forest. The tile-like forms also served as tactile cues for the client. Feel free to let us know if you think Karan did a good job, we’d be happy to pass your compliments on to him! 😊
