IIM’s: Small numbers? Maybe. Big change? Definitely

IIM Trichy Institute and logos of IIM Trichy, Nagpur, Mumbai, Nivea, HDFC Ergo, Tata Power, Bindwel, L Point.

Summer Placements across IIM’s have been muted and the same is true for Persons with Disabilities studying in these Top B-Schools. So when the campuses reached out for help, Atypical Advantage tried with all it’s might. Thirteen students with disabilities from IIM Trichy, Mumbai, and Nagpur have been placed in firms like Nivea , HDFC Argo & Tata Power. You might think, “Thirteen? Is that really news?” But those who’ve worked at the grassroots—the ones who sat through late-night meetings, navigated inaccessible systems, and kept belief alive—know exactly what thirteen really means.

Don’t miss what Prashant from IIM T has to say!

Ashoka University: A place where inclusion doesn’t just live in brochures

Braille code outside classrooms and Supriya taking the session at Ashoka University.

At Ashoka University on the occasion of the World Autism Month, a session on Neurodiversity was organised by Atypical Advantage. Did you know this about Ashoka? Braille runs across every hallway. Mobile apps whispered classroom names to students with visual impairment. Soundproof quiet rooms offered sanctuary to neurodiverse students. And the hostels are designed with access as a first principle, not an afterthought. Over 100 students with different disabilities studied at Ashoka, not in silos but with everyone else. Even the seminar where our trainer, Supriya spoke — students and faculty asked questions that didn’t sound like boxes being ticked, but with an intent to create a future where everyone belonged. There was a quiet absorption in the room — the kind that whispered: maybe, just maybe, inclusion isn’t about “bringing people in.” It’s about realizing they were already here, we just hadn’t been listening.

Global School Ahmedabad: A School Gate that opens into future

Entrance Facade of Global Indian International School Ahmedabad.

There’s nothing more powerful than a visual that leaves a lasting impression—and Global Indian International School Ahmedabad understood this deeply. With 32 unique features, the school’s striking entrance does more than welcome; it tells a story. Illustrated by Chinmay Pradhan, an accomplished artist with a hearing impairment, the façade stands as a symbol of inclusivity and creativity. For young Riya, it was the first day at the institute—her fingers tracing the symbols of science, art, and culture, when her father saw the visuals and whispered, “They’re not just imparting education, they’re shaping creators here.” Under the visionary leadership of Principal Mr. Caesar D’Silva, the entrance became more than architecture—it became a message. “Let the first step tell the story,” he said the team. And it does. By the time the project was completed, it had already become a talking point across the city—not just for its design, but for what it stood for: a school unafraid to reimagine education, starting right from its doorstep.

News 1: Gujarat Government Lowers Disability Threshold for Sant Surdas Scheme, Benefiting 82,000 More Individuals The Gujarat government has revised the eligibility criteria for the Sant Surdas scheme, reducing the required disability percentage from 80% to 60%. This change is projected to extend benefits to an additional 82,000 individuals with disabilities. Under the scheme, beneficiaries receive monthly assistance of ₹1,000 directly deposited into their bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Notably, the government has removed age and income limits, as well as the mandatory requirement of a Below Poverty Line (BPL) card, thereby simplifying access to the scheme. As of January 31, 2025, the state disbursed ₹40 crore in financial assistance to disabled persons and allocated ₹99 crore for the scheme in the current budget. (Source: TOI). News 2: Maharashtra Government Announces Comprehensive Initiatives for Persons with Disabilities On April 7, 2025, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis unveiled a series of measures aimed at enhancing the welfare of persons with disabilities (PwDs). Key initiatives include the development of an employment policy tailored for PwDs and the establishment of 'Divyang Bhavans' in each district to provide centralized access to various services. The government also plans to implement Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for financial aid under the Special Assistance Scheme and is considering a dedicated housing plan for PwDs. Additionally, there will be a focused campaign for disability certification to facilitate access to government schemes and services. The administration emphasizes the need for inclusive higher education infrastructure and has directed relevant departments to propose measures to integrate PwDs into the educational mainstream.
