Atypical Advantage launched a revolutionary ISL-supported English course for Deaf and Hard of Hearing learners. Featuring 180 hours of visual-first content, it breaks employment and literacy barriers. With over 100 registrations in 24 hours and major media coverage, the platform successfully empowers learners with vital communication skills. | | English wasn't built for every learner. So, we built something that is | For years, we met eager Deaf individuals who were ready to study, build careers, and grow. Yet one challenge surfaced repeatedly: written English. Not because they lacked the ability to learn, but because most English courses rely on spoken explanations and teaching methods that were never designed for Deaf learners. Parents and teachers wanted to help but often lacked accessible resources themselves. So, we asked a simple question: What if English were taught the way Deaf learners actually learn? The answer became Atypical Academy. | When learning is accessible, confidence follows | The course starts with the fundamentals before gradually building reading, writing, grammar and workplace communication skills. With 180 hours of visual-first content, ISL explanations, interactive practice, assessments and a certificate upon completion, learners can progress at their own pace while developing skills they can use in classrooms, interviews and everyday life. Even before the official launch, the impact was becoming visible. "This course explains grammar, writing and soft skills through simple, easy-to-understand examples. It has made me feel more comfortable and confident while improving my English for interviews and everyday communication." says Sarthak, Pilot Learner. “The sessions helped me discover new topics, improve my vocabulary and learn from group discussions. I now feel more motivated to continue learning and work towards my personal growth.” says Nidhi, another pilot learner. For learners like Sarthak and Nidhi, English is becoming a tool for confidence, independence and new opportunities. | Building stronger classrooms | To create lasting change, it is equally important to support educators too. We have worked closely with teachers from SKID and CRR through our Train-the-Trainer programme to explore visual, activity-based approaches to teaching English, while sharing valuable feedback that helped shape the course. "Atypical Academy's training introduced us to a structured approach to teaching Deaf children, especially through engaging visual activities. It's going to be incredibly helpful in our classrooms," says Anupama R.K., High School Science Teacher at SKID. "I learned how to make my sessions more engaging for children. That was something I felt I was missing, and that's what made this training so valuable for me," shares Manimekal S. Nair, Audiologist and Speech Pathologist at CRR. By equipping teachers with more effective, accessible methods, our aim is to help create learning environments where Deaf students can thrive, and to make this mode of education, the new normal. | | New ISL-supported English initiative focuses on literacy and employment readiness for Deaf learners | A new English learning initiative tailored for Deaf and Hard of Hearing learners in India seeks to address literacy and employment barriers using accessible, visual-first teaching methods supported by Indian Sign Language (ISL).
